Recap: UC Riverside vs. CS-Northridge

Riverside, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - A pair of free throws by Austin Quick with 18 seconds remaining in double-overtime proved to be the difference as the UC Riverside Highlanders slipped by Cal State Northridge, 106-105, in Big West Conference play at SRC Arena.

Quick finished the marathon contest with 17 points off the bench for the Highlanders (9-19, 4-10 Big West) as they snapped a five-game slide. Chris Patton led all scorers with 30 points, adding 11 rebounds, while Sam Finley tacked on 20 points, Steven Thornton 16 and Taylor Johns 14 points, the latter also clearing 10 rebounds of his own.

The Matadors (14-17, 6-9) were paced by Stephen Maxwell who registered a double-double for the visitors with 25 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Josh Greene posted 26 points and six assists, Stephan Hicks 24 points and four steals as the team lost for the third time in four games.

UC Riverside shot only 36.1 percent from the field in the first half, including 2-of-10 beyond the arc, but still the squad was able to lock the score at 37-37 at the break nonetheless. The Matadors kept the door open by turning the ball over 10 times in the period.

In the second half Riverside, which was guilty of 10 miscues, connected on 55.6 percent from the floor and 15-of-17 at the free-throw line, but allowed Maxwell to tie the meeting at 83-83 at the free-throw line, although he could have ended the meeting right there had he hit the second of his attempts at the stripe in the waning moments.

Maxwell started off the first overtime in the same manner in which he closed out regulation, connecting on attempts at the charity stripe, but the visitors needed Hicks to convert a 3-pointer in the final moments in order to knot the score at 97-97.

The teams shot an identical 47.2 percent from the field for the game, with the slightest of differences coming at the free-throw line where the Highlanders, who survived 19 turnovers, outscored the visitors by a 34-31 margin.
