Recap: Southern Utah vs. UC Riverside

Cedar City, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Behind Chris Patton's 21 points and 15 rebounds, the UC Riverside Highlanders made easy work of the Southern Utah Thunderbirds, 74-59, in non-conference action at Centrum Arena.

Patton shot 9-of-18 from the floor for UCR (2-2), while Steven Thornton chipped in 20 points of his own. Taylor Johns came off the bench to tally 10 points for the visitors.

For SUU (1-3), Trey Kennedy scored 15 points but did so on just 5-of-13 from the field. Chris Nsenki (10 points) was the only other player to net in double figures.

SUU led by as many as eight midway through the first half, but UCR caught fire late in the stanza and took a 36-33 lead into intermission.

The Highlanders carried that momentum into the second half, where they started on a 24-6 run and never looked back from there.

UCR shot 44.8 percent from the field, compared to just 38.6 percent for SUU. The Highlanders also won the turnover battle, 17-11.
