Recap: Charlotte vs. Marshall

Charlotte, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Kareem Canty led the way with 21 points as the Marshall Thundering Herd edged the Charlotte 49ers, 59-56, in a Conference USA matchup at Halton Arena.

For the Thundering Herd (9-17, 3-8), Chris Thomas added 18 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field, as Marshall snapped a three-game losing streak.

Shawn Lester finished with 16 points to lead the 49ers (14-9, 5-5), losers of three-straight. Terrence Williams chipped in with 14 points, Pierria Henry dished out 10 assists and Willie Clayton pulled down 16 rebounds in the losing effort.

The teams were evenly matched in the first half. Marshall shot 43.8 percent from the field but just 2-of-10 from beyond the arc, while Charlotte shot a nearly identical 44.8 percent from the field, including 2-of-6 from 3-point range. as The Thundering Herd were able to force eight 49er turnovers in the first, converting them into 14 points and went into intermission leading 36-32.

After halftime, both squads struggled from the field. Marshall shot just 34.8 percent, missing all three of its 3-point tries in the process. Charlotte shot a woeful 27.3 percent, and missed all but two of its 17 shots from 3-point distance.

Trailing 59-56 with 19 seconds to play, the 49ers forced a Marshall turnover and had several chances to send the game to overtime, but 3-pointers by Lester and Henry in the final moments were both off the mark, allowing the Herd to escape with the victory.

The Herd outscored the 49ers in the paint, 34-30. Charlotte had the advantage on the glass, outrebounding Marshall 48-35.
