Greensboro, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Akeem Richmond nailed three free throws in the final seconds to lift the East Carolina Pirates to an 85-84 win over the UNC Greensboro Spartans in a non-conference thriller at Greensboro Coliseum.

Richmond finished with 19 points for East Carolina (2-0), which had five players in double figures. Paris Campbell scored 16 points, Caleb White tallied 13 and Brandan Smith and Marshall Guilmette added 10 apiece.

Tevon Saddler hit 10-of-15 shots from the floor and 14-of-19 from the free throw line to record 34 points for UNC Greensboro (1-1). Kyle Cain added 16 points and nine rebounds. Nicholas Paulos hit four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points while Tyrone Outlaw chipped in 10 off the bench.

At the end of the first half the Spartans were able to sprint out to a 40-30 lead by shooting 48 percent from the floor while the Pirates hit just 28.1 percent.

Both teams shot above 50 percent in the final 20 minutes but the Pirates were able to cut their deficit to 84-82 with 12 seconds to play. Richmond managed to force a turnover and was fouled by Paulos with a second remaining. Richmond then sank all three free throws to seal the comeback victory.
