Recap: Middle Tennessee vs. Akron

Murfreesboro, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - Shawn Jones registered a double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds as the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders downed the Akron Zips, 80-73, in non-conference action at the Murphy Center.

Jones led the Blue Raiders (3-0) as he converted 6-of-10 shots from the floor and also 12-of-14 at the charity stripe. Jaqawn Raymond and Tweety Knight chipped in 17 points each while Tweety Knight added 11 points and five assists.

Quincy Diggs paced Akron (1-2) with 25 points, but also committed seven of the team's 18 turnovers. Pay Forsythe scored 11 points and Jake Kretzer tallied nine points and six boards off the bench.

Middle Tennessee managed to take a 28-21 lead with 4:41 remaining in the opening period, but the Zips scored seven consecutive points to even the score. The contest went into the intermission tied at 33-33 after the Blue Raiders shot 51.9 percent from the floor and Akron hit on 50 percent of its field goal tries in the first half.

The Zips hit on 45.4 percent of their field goal tries, but went just 3-of-14 from beyond the arc after the break. Middle Tennessee pulled away as it converted 61.9 percent of its shots from the field while also making 19-of-29 at the free-throw line.

Despite the loss, Akron outscored the hosts, 38-32, in the paint
