Recap: Rice vs. South Alabama

Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Max Guercy hit a 3-pointer with one second left in the third overtime to give the Rice Owls a 96-93 victory over the South Alabama Jaguars in a non-conference contest at Tudor Fieldhouse.

Sean Obi had double-double with 25 points and 19 rebounds, both career-highs, for the Owls (4-5). Guercy added 20 points, while Keith Washington and Austin Ramljak had 15 apiece.

Antoine Allen led the Jaguars (5-4) with 26 points. Augustine Rubit tallied 17 points and 10 boards, and Mychal Ammons also had a double-double, scoring 16 points and bringing down 14 rebounds. Ken Williams chipped in 15 points and five assists.

South Alabama shot a meager 25.9 percent on its field goal tries in the first half and made 4-of-17 from 3-point range. Rice took advantage by shooting 50 percent from the floor to take a 38-23 lead into the break.

The Jaguars came out of the half on fire by making 54.2 percent of their shots from the floor and sinking 9-of-14 from beyond the arc. Rice struggled, shooting 37.9 percent from the field. With 19 seconds left, Rubit had a 2-of-2 trip to the foul line to tie the game up at 67 and send it to overtime.

After a back-and-forth first overtime period, Ammons made two free throws to tie the game at 73. Neither team got a shot off before the period ending.

The second overtime period proved to be another back-and-forth affair. Allen made two free throws with 18 seconds left to send the game to a third overtime as Guercy missed a layup with two seconds remaining.

Finally in the third overtime Guercy made a game-winning 3-pointer with one second left to give the Owls the victory.

Rice dominated inside by outscoring South Alabama 30-12 in the paint. The Owls' bench performed well as they outscored the Jaguars' reserves, 28-14.
