Recap: North Texas vs. Texas-El Paso

Denton, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Willms netted 14 points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked three shots as the Texas-El Paso Miners easily coasted past the North Texas Mean Green, 74-54, in a Conference USA tilt at The Super Pit.

C.J. Cooper scored 13 points, and Vince Hunter chipped in 11 with eight rebounds for UTEP (21-9, 11-4 C-USA). Julian Washburn added nine points, eight rebounds and four assists in the win, which ended a two-game Miners losing skid.

Alzee Williams led all scorers in the contest with 15 points for North Texas (15-14, 6-9). Jordan Williams contributed a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Maurice Aniefiok tallied 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench. The Mean Green snapped a four-game losing streak with the loss.

UTEP shot 46.2 percent from the floor in the first half, and connected on 9- of-12 from the free-throw line to take a 36-21 lead into the intermission. North Texas shot a dismal 21.9 percent in the frame, and missed all seven of its 3-point tries.

The Miners improved on their already impressive shooting mark in the second half, netting 59.1 percent of their shots and 10-of-15 from the charity stripe. The Mean Green barely improved in the period, shooting 29.4 percent from the field, including 2-of-10 from 3-point range.

UTEP won the battle in points in the paint, 28-16, and outrebounded North Texas, 46-33. The Mean Green had a 16-11 edge in points off turnovers.
