Glenn Cosey had team highs in points (23), rebounds (four), and assists (four) for the Colonels (10-5, 1-1), who had their three-game win streak snapped. Corey Walden scored 19 and Orlando Williams added 18, making six of his nine field goal attempts.

The first half saw the Colonels jump out to several leads, including an early 9-2 edge. Eastern Kentucky could not get any substantial distance between themselves and the Cougars, however, and ended the first half up by three, 42-39. The Cougars shot 54.2 percent from the field in the half, but the Colonels bested them by shooting a stellar 60.9 percent.

The second half remained close until the Cougars broke the game open by turning a slim 65-64 lead into a commanding 74-64 advantage with 4:42 to play. The Colonels cut the lead to 81-79 on a 3-point shot by Williams with one minute to play, but Messer hit a layup and two foul shots for the final margin.

The Cougars outrebounded the Colonels 33-22, and their bench outscored EKU's, 41-24.
