Recap: Western Mich vs. Akron
Kalamazoo, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - David Brown scored 17 points, grabbed six rebounds and recorded four steals, and the Western Michigan Broncos hit clutch free throws in the final seconds of the game to down the Akron Zips, 57-54, in Mid-American Conference action at University Arena.
Shayne Whittington scored 15 points and pulled down seven rebounds for Western Michigan (15-8, 8-3 MAC). Both Connar Tava and Tucker Haymond chipped in 12 points in the win, which was the fourth in a row for the Broncos.
Demetrius Treadwell tallied 16 points and 12 rebounds for the double-double to lead Akron (16-8, 8-3). Quincy Diggs chipped in nine points, five rebounds and three steals in the loss. The Zips snapped a two-game win streak with the defeat.
Neither team shot well in first half of play. Western Michigan struggled to a 34.8 shooting percentage in the frame, while Akron got off to a worse start at 30.3 percent shooting from the field. Still, the Zips led at the half, 28-20.
The Broncos battled back in the second period, connecting on 47.8 percent of their shot attempts, and hit 13-of-16 from the free-throw line. Akron only improved to 38.1 percent shooting from the floor.
Western Michigan held the advantage in points in the paint, 28-12, and from the free-throw line, 16-12. Akron had the edge in bench points, 21-0.Game Notes
