Recap: Iona vs. George Mason

New Rochelle, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Sean Armand dropped in 30 points to lead the Iona Gaels to a 89-73 victory over the George Mason Patriots in a non-conference matchup at the Hynes Center.

For the Gaels (2-2), A.J. English added 18 points and six assists, David Laury finished with 14 points, Tre Bowman scored 11 and Mike Poole chipped in with 10 points.

Marko Gujanicic and Sherrod Wright both finished with 12 points to lead the Patriots (4-1). Bryon Allen and Corey Edwards each tallied 10 points.

The Gaels scored the first 14 points of the game, part of a decisive 34-5 run over the opening 11 minutes, as they took a 44-25 lead into halftime. Iona shot 50 percent from the field in the first half, but just 3-of-13 from 3- point range. They held George Mason to just 33.3 percent shooting from the field.

In the second half Iona again connected on 50 percent of its field goal tries, including 4-of-11 from beyond the arc. The Patriots improved to 45.7 percent shooting in the second. The Gaels never led by less than 15 after halftime, pushing their advantage to as many as 32 points, as they cruised to the victory.

Iona was able to convert 15 George Mason turnovers into 26 points, while giving up just 13 points on its 11 miscues. The Gaels had the edge on points in the paint, 44-38.
