Recap: Ball State vs. Western Mich
Muncie, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Shayne Whittington tallied a double-double with 28 points and 14 rebounds as the Western Michigan Broncos outlasted the Ball State Cardinals in overtime, 88-81, in a Mid-American Conference battle at Worthen Arena.
David Brown scored 25 points with six rebounds and three steals for Western Michigan (19-8, 12-3 MAC). Connar Tava notched 23 points and six rebounds in the win, which was the eighth in a row for the Broncos.
Zavier Turner netted 20 points with five assists to pace Ball State (4-22, 1-14), while Jesse Berry added 17 points. Chris Bond notched a double-double for the Cardinals with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Ball State has lost 10 consecutive games.
Ball State hit 51.6 percent of its field goal tries in the first half and took a 39-30 lead at the intermission. Western Michigan connected on 37.9 percent of its shot attempts in the frame.
The Broncos came out in the second half and caught up to Ball State with 46.9 percent shooting from the floor, adding 12-of-18 from the free-throw line. The Cardinals made 44 percent of their shots in the period. A Tava jumper with seven seconds left to play knotted the game at 75-75, sending it to the extra period.
In overtime, it was all Western Michigan. The Broncos went 4-of-7 shooting from the field and added 5-of-6 from the free-throw line to outscore Ball State, 13-6, in the extra time.
Western Michigan had the edge in points in the paint, 44-30, and in points off turnovers, 22-12. Ball State held the advantage in bench points, 17-2.Game Notes
