Recap: SIU Edwardsville vs. Tenn-Martin

Edwardsville, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Donivine Stewart netted 24 points and dished out a team-high eight assists as the SIU Edwardsville Cougars outlasted the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks, 84-78, in Ohio Valley Conference action at Vadalabene Center.

Kris Davis scored 21 points and grabbed six rebounds for SIU Edwardsville (10-15, 6-5 OVC). Christian Salecich chipped in 12 points off the bench in the win, which was the fourth in five games for the Cougars.

Mike Liabo came off the bench to score a team-best 17 points for UT Martin (7-19, 2-9), adding eight rebounds and four assists to his stat line. Myles Taylor and Terence Smith each tallied 13 points, and Justin Childs added 12. Marshun Newell netted 10 points and distributed a team-high seven assists in the loss. It was the fourth in a row for the Skyhawks.

Both teams came out firing in the first half. SIUE netted 60.7 percent of its field goal tries in the frame, including 8-of-13 from 3-point range, and took a 47-40 lead into the intermission. UT Martin hit 55.6 percent of its shots in the first 20 minutes.

The Cougars stayed above 50 percent shooting in the second period, connecting on 52.2 percent from the floor. The Skyhawks hit 47.1 percent in the stanza, but could only make a one-point dent in the SIUE lead.

SIUE won the battle in fast break points, 12-4, and from the free-throw line, 16-7. UT Martin had the advantage in bench points, 48-22.
