Recap: Rhode Island vs. Massachusetts

Kingston, RI (SportsNetwork.com) - Chaz Williams tallied 21 points and seven assists to lead the Massachusetts Minutemen to a 73-68 triumph over the Rhode Island Rams in Atlantic 10 Conference action at the Ryan Center.

Williams shot 7-of-15 from the field for UMass (19-4, 6-3 A-10), which has won back-to-back games. Derrick Gordon and Raphiael Putney scored 11 points apiece for the visitors, with Gordon adding nine rebounds to his performance.

For URI (11-13, 2-7), losers of three straight, E.C. Matthews paced all scorers with 24 points, while Xavier Munford netted 19.

UMass dominated the first half in terms of field goal percentage, sinking a lofty 60.9 percent of its tries compared to just 37.9 percent for URI, but the Minutemen carried just a one-point lead into intermission, 36-35. The Rams shot 12-of-16 from the free-throw line in the frame and earned extra possessions by forcing 10 UMass turnovers.

The Rams pieced together a 12-3 run midway through the second half to take a seven-point lead with under nine minutes to play, but the Minutemen responded by ending the game on an 18-6 spurt to capture the five-point win, shooting 5- of-6 from the free-throw line over the final 31 seconds to seal their fate.

UMass outrebounded URI, 36-27, and earned a 43-28 scoring advantage in the paint.
