Recap: Kennesaw St vs. Youngstown St

Kennesaw, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Led by Kendrick Perry's 20 points, the Youngstown State Penguins managed to dismiss the host team Kennesaw State Owls, 73-57, in the opening round of the Kennesaw State Men's Basketball Tournament at the KSU Convocation Center.

Perry stuffed the stat sheet with seven rebounds, five assists, three steals and a block for Youngstown State (1-0). Ryan Weber shot 4-of-5 from beyond the arc on his way to 18 points, while Kamren Belin and Marcus Keene chipped in 10 points apiece.

For Kennesaw State (0-1), Delbert Love scored 13 points off the bench to lead the way. Bernard Morena chipped in 12 points and a team-high six rebounds, and Orlando Coleman had 10 points.

Youngstown State struggled in the first half, shooting just 35.5 percent from the floor, but it went into intermission with a 34-21 lead after holding Kennesaw State to only 22.2 percent field goal shooting. The Penguins gained separation with a 16-1 run midway through the frame.

The Penguins improved to 44.8 percent from the field in the second half, and their advantage never dipped below double-digits in the final 20 minutes.

Kennesaw State finished the game with more turnovers (19) than field goals (18). Youngstown State had an outstanding showing from the foul line (19- of-21).

The tournament continues on Saturday when Youngstown State takes on FIU and Kennesaw State faces Eastern Kentucky.
