Recap: Portland State vs. Montana

Portland, OR (SportsNetwork.com) - Gary Winston scored 21 points off the bench and drilled the game-winning 3-pointer late in triple overtime, as the Portland State Vikings outlasted the Montana Grizzlies, 81-78, in a Big Sky Conference thriller at the Stott Center.

Marcus Hall also scored 21 points on 5-of-6 from 3-point range for Portland State (6-7, 1-3 Big Sky), which snapped a three-game losing streak. Tim Douglas and Andre Winston netted 18 and 10 points, respectively.

For Montana (6-7, 1-3), Jordan Gregory led all scorers with 25 points on 9- of-19 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free-throw line. Kareem Jamar added 19 points for the visitors, while Keron DeShields put up 17 points.

Both teams were hot from the field in the first half, with Portland State shooting 62.5 percent and Montana 52.2 percent. The Vikings took a 32-31 lead into intermission.

The Grizzlies appeared to have the game well in hand up by nine with under three minutes to play in regulation, but the Vikings ripped off a 10-0 run to take a 57-56 lead with 29 seconds left. DeShields was sent to the foul line with 16 seconds to play, but after missing the first attempt, he drilled the second to tie the game and force overtime.

Trailing by two in the final minute of the first extra session, Portland State tied the score at 62 on a Brandon Cataldo bucket. Montana had a chance to win it at the buzzer but a Gregory 3-pointer was no good.

The Vikings led by as many as seven in the second overtime, but the Grizzlies ran off a 7-0 spurt, with an Eric Hutchison three-point play tying the game at 72 with 53 seconds left. After empty possessions by both sides, yet another extra period was called upon.

The back-and-forth nature continued in the third overtime, but Portland State finally put the game away with Winston's 3-pointer with four seconds left. Jamar's long-range attempt at the buzzer did not fall, as the marathon contest finally came to a close.

Portland State held on to win despite committing a game-high 18 turnovers.
