Recap: Portland State vs. Northern Ariz

Portland, OR (SportsNetwork.com) - Kris Yanku's layup with time winding down was just what Northern Arizona needed as the Lumberjacks captured a thrilling 65-63 win over the Portland State Vikings in Big Sky Conference play at the Stott Center.

Yanku finished with nine points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals off the bench for Northern Arizona (11-13, 8-5 Big Sky) as the squad won for the third time in the last four outings. Quinton Upshur led the NAU offense with 16 points, followed by Ako Kaluna with 13 and Gaellan Bewernick with 10 points in the triumph.

The Vikings (11-11, 6-7) were paced by Dashaun Wiggins who dropped in a game- high 19 points in a reserve role, followed by Tim Douglas with 16 as the pair combined to shoot 7-of-10 behind the 3-point line for a team that has lost three straight. Kyle Richardson came up a rebound shy of a double-double with his 13 points, while Marcus Hall added 10.

PSU converted a total of just eight field goals in the first half, but five of those came from 3-point range, which was enough to keep the hosts within a point at the break, 26-25. The Lumberjacks shot a woeful 1-of-7 beyond the arc through the first 20 minutes of play.

In the second half NAU picked up the pace with 56.0 percent accuracy from the floor, but again long-range shooting was an issue (2-of-6), but that didn't matter as Yanku took the ball to the basket for the go-ahead score.

The game featured eight ties and 15 lead changes and the Lumberjacks got away with just 3-of-13 accuracy on the outside and 10-of-18 shooting at the free- throw line.
