Recap: Pepperdine vs. BYU

Malibu, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Behind a career-high 24 points from Malcolm Brooks, the Pepperdine Waves took down the BYU Cougars, 80-74, in a West Coast Conference showdown at Firestone Fieldhouse.

Brooks shot 8-of-12 from the field for Pepperdine (9-5, 2-0 WCC), including 6- of-9 from beyond the arc. Jeremy Major scored 13 points, while Stacy Davis tallied a double-double of 12 points and 14 rebounds. Amadi Udenyi and Brendan Lane scored 12 and 11 points, respectively, as the Waves won their third straight game.

For BYU (8-7, 0-2), Tyler Haws poured in 20 points and Kyle Collinsworth stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists, five steals and two blocks. Skyler Halford also netted 11 points, while Eric Mika chipped in 10.

Pepperdine opened up a comfortable 40-28 lead at intermission after shooting 45.2 percent from the field in the first half, including 6-of-11 from 3-point range. BYU, meanwhile, shot just 37.5 percent and went without a long-range bucket.

The Waves led by 13 with under nine minutes to go, but the Cougars came storming back with a 10-0 run to make their deficit just three, 65-62, with 6:16 left on a Nate Austin basket. BYU would get no closer, however, as Pepperdine shot 5-of-6 from the free-throw line over the final 43 seconds to seal its fate.

Pepperdine had a commanding advantage from 3-point range, shooting 13-of-24 from long distance compared to just 1-of-11 for BYU.
