Recap: Portland vs. BYU
Portland, OR (SportsNetwork.com) - Thomas van der Mars finished with 27 points and 18 rebounds as the Portland Pilots outlasted the BYU Cougars 114-110 in triple overtime in a West Coast Conference battle at the Chiles Center.
Bobby Sharp also netted 27 points and Kevin Bailey and Ryan Nicholas each had 15 points for Portland (12-8, 4-4 WCC), although Bailey fouled out. Bryce Pressley added 12 points, but also left the game with five fouls.
BYU (13-8, 5-3) was paced by a career-high 48 points from Tyler Haws. Matt Carlino added 25 points and nine assists, Kyle Collinsworth recorded a double- double (12 points, 12 rebounds) and Nate Austin cleared 15 boards.
In the first half Portland shot 52.9 percent from the floor, including a 5- of-7 effort from beyond the arc, to take a 45-40 lead at halftime. BYU shot 51.9 percent from the field in the period.
The Cougars were able to rally in the second half by shooting 60 percent from the floor. Haws made a layup with 30 seconds to play, which evened the score at 80-80 and forced overtime.
Portland led by five with 24 seconds to play in the first overtime, but Skyler Halford and Haws both nailed 3-pointers in the final seconds to extend the game.
BYU went on an 8-0 run to open the second extra session, but the Pilots could not be denied, as Sharp capped a 10-3 run in the final minutes with a 3- pointer that knotted the score at 103-103 and pushed the game onward.
The Pilots then scored the first seven points of the third and final overtime to finally take control and pull out the win.Game Notes
