Recap: Sacramento St vs. Southern Utah

Sacramento, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Mikh McKinney scored 15 points as the Sacramento State Hornets captured a 68-56 win over the Southern Utah Thunderbirds in Big Sky Conference action at the Hornets Nest.

McKinney shot 5-of-8 from the floor and added six rebounds, five assists and three steals for the Hornets (10-11, 6-6 Big Sky) as they posted a fourth straight win. Dylan Garrity accounted for 13 points and five assists, while Alex Tiffin cleared 10 rebounds.

The Thunderbirds (1-20, 0-12), losers of 20 straight games since defeating Arizona Christian in the season opener, were paced by Jaren Jeffery with a game-high 21 points off the bench, while fellow reserve Juwan Major posted 11 points in the setback.

The Thunderbirds shot only 8-of-24 from the floor in the first half and missed both attempts behind the 3-point line, leaving the squad with a 36-20 deficit at the break. Sacramento attempted the same number of field goals, but knocked down 15, producing 18 points in the paint alone.

The visitors showed signs of life in the second half with an impressive 51.9 percent accuracy from the field, but at the same time the squad converted only 6-of-13 at the free-throw line, en route to yet another loss.

The Thunderbirds, who were beaten on the glass by a 38-25 margin, are coming dangerously close going an entire year without a Division I victory, the last of which was a narrow 73-72 final versus Cal State Northridge back on Feb. 23, 2013. The last conference win for SUU was an 81-79 overtime decision versus Idaho State on Feb. 7, 2013.
