Recap: St Marys-CA vs. BYU

Moraga, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Tyler Haws netted 18 points on 8-of-15 shooting as the BYU Cougars narrowly edged out the St. Mary's Gaels, 60-57, in a West Coast Conference bout at McKeon Pavilion.

Kyle Collinsworth scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds for BYU (18-10, 10-5 WCC). Nate Austin pulled down a team-high 11 boards in the victory. The Cougars have won five of their last six games.

Brad Waldow notched a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds for St. Mary's (19-8, 9-5). Stephen Holt tallied 13 points, and connected on 3-of-7 from 3-point range in the contest. The loss ends a three-game win streak for the Gaels.

St. Mary's connected on an even 50 percent from the field in the first half, despite hitting just 2-of-11 from 3-point range. The Gaels took a 35-25 lead into the intermission. BYU hit 44.4 percent of its field goal tries in the first frame, and missed all five 3-point tries.

The Cougars exploded in the second half, hitting 57.1 percent of their attempts and knocked down 10-of-13 from the free-throw line. The Gaels hit just 32 percent from the floor in the period, including 2-of-8 from deep, which allowed the Cougars to come back for the win.

BYU had the edge in points off turnovers, 13-3, and in fast break points, 4-0. St. Mary's outrebounded the Cougars in the contest, 36-29.
