Recap: Western Carolina vs. Elon

Cullowhee, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Trey Sumler scored a game-high 21 points as the Western Carolina Catamounts collected a 74-62 win over the Elon Phoenix in a Southern Conference matchup at the Ramsey Center.

Sumler connected on 8-of-12 from the floor and added six assists for Western Carolina (9-8, 1-1 SoCon). James Sinclair and Tom Tankelewicz each added 12 points.

Austin Hamilton tallied 19 points and Sebastian Koch tacked on 16 points and six rebounds for Elon (7-8, 0-1). Lucas Troutman contributed 15 points and nine rebounds but also had eight turnovers.

The Catamounts only shot at a 37.5 percent clip in the first half, but they held the Phoenix to just eight field goals and led 32-30 at intermission.

Western Carolina improved to 48.5 percent shooting and had 11 more field goal attempts than Elon in the second frame, en route to the 12-point victory.

The Catamounts forced 23 turnovers, which they traded in for 28 points.
