Recap: Iona vs. Saint Peters

New Rochelle, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - A.J. English knocked down a shot from beyond the arc as time expired to propel the Iona Gaels to a 62-59 victory over the Saint Peter's Peacocks in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference thriller at the Hynes Athletic Center.

English had made only 1-of-10 shots from the floor and missed his first seven attempts from 3-point range before coming up big in the clutch for Iona (16-8, 13-2 MAAC), which recorded its eighth win in a row. David Laury came off the bench to lead the Gaels with 16 points and eight rebounds while Mike Poole added 13 points. Tre Bowman scored 10 points.

Desi Washington paced the Peacocks (9-15, 5-10) with 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field. Chris Burke tallied 14 points, five rebounds and five assists while Marvin Dominique had 13 points and seven boards. The loss snapped Saint Peter's two-game winning streak.

Although both sided made 9-of-24 field goal attempts in the first half, Iona took a 24-22 lead into the intermission thanks to its narrow, 4-1, advantage in free-throw line scoring. Poole scored 10 of his points on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting from the field while the rest of the Gaels combined to shoot just 21.1 percent from the floor in the opening period. Burke kept the visitors within striking distance with 11 first-half points.

Iona heated up to sink 7-of-15 attempts from behind the 3-point line after the break. The Peacocks also improved to knock down 59.3 percent of their field goal attempts in the second stanza. The Gaels led by as many as 11 before the visitors rallied back over the final few minutes of the contest. Saint Peter's Jamel Fields made his only basket of the game with four seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 59 before English's buzzer beating triple.

Iona's reserves outscored the Peacocks' bench, 16-6. Saint Peter's came up short despite holding a sizeable, 34-14, edge in points in the paint.
