Recap: Iona vs. Monmouth

New Rochelle, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Tre Bowman netted 23 points as the Iona Gaels pounded the Monmouth Hawks, 89-70, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tilt at Hynes Athletics Center.

A.J. English turned in a double-double for Iona (17-8, 14-2 MAAC), scoring 21 points and dishing out 13 assists in the win. Sean Armand and Isaiah Williams each chipped in 13 points, and Mike Poole added 11. The Gaels have won nine consecutive games.

Deon Jones scored 16 points, pulled down seven rebounds and dished out four assists for Monmouth (10-16, 4-11). Khalil Brown contributed 13 points, and Chris Brady brought in 12 boards in the loss, which was the sixth in a row for the Hawks.

Iona hit 44.1 percent of its field goal tries in the first half, including 7- of-22 from 3-point range, and took a 42-26 lead into the intermission. Monmouth shot an even 44 percent from the floor in the frame, but went just 1- of-4 from deep.

The Hawks fired back in the second half, hitting 20-of-36 shot attempts (55.6 percent) from the field. It wasn't enough, though, as the Gaels connected on 50 percent of their attempts, and went 7-of-16 from 3-point range. Iona also hit 14-of-18 from the free-throw line in the period.

Iona had the advantage in points off turnovers, 27-4, and from the free-throw line, 19-5. The Gaels also outscored the Hawks from 3-point distance, 42-9. Monmouth had the edge in points in the paint, 46-28.
