Recap: Rider vs. Iona

Lawrenceville, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Sean Armand and A.J. English each scored 20 points as the Iona Gaels held on for an 80-77 victory over the Rider Broncs in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference joust at Alumni Gymnasium.

David Laury contributed a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds for Iona (18-8, 15-2 MAAC), which has won 10 straight.

Jimmie Taylor netted 19 points for Rider (13-13, 9-8), which has lost four of its last five. Daniel Stewart added 15 points, Anthony Myles tallied 14 and Zedric Sadler chipped in 12.

Iona got out to a 41-32 lead at halftime. The Gaels hit on 45.2 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes, while limiting Rider to 34.2 percent shooting.

In the second half the Broncs found their stroke, sinking 56.7 percent from the field, compared to a 47.8 percent effort from the Gaels. In fact, Rider sliced a 14-point deficit down to a single point (78-77) with 14 seconds to play. However, English answered with a pair of free-throws and Myles missed a 3-point attempt in the final seconds as the comeback fell short.

The Broncos outscored the Gaels off of turnovers (20-11) and in the paint (44-38). Iona had a 24-10 scoring advantage at the free-throw line.
