Recap: Western Carolina vs. Niagara
Kent, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Trey Sumler was unstoppable as he registered a double-double with 35 points and 10 assists to lead the Western Carolina Catamounts to a 98-90 victory over the Niagara Purple Eagles in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at the MAC Center.
Sumler converted 10-of-20 shots from the floor and also pulled down seven rebounds for WCU (4-3), which also received 12 points off the bench from Rhett Harrelson. Mike Brown made all seven of his field goal attempts including three from 3-point range to add 17 points and Brandon Boggs just missed a double-double with 17 points and nine boards.
Niagara (1-3) came up short despite a sensational performance from Antoine Mason, who tallied 35 points on 12-of-22 shooting from the field. Ramone Snowden and Marcus Wade chipped in 16 points apiece while Rayvon Harris scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench.
The Catamounts came out of the gate hot as they shot 64.3 percent from the floor and drained 6-of-9 attempts from behind the 3-point line in the opening 20 minutes. Niagara went into the intermission trailing, 56-40, after hitting on 44.4 percent of its field goal tries in the first half.
The Purple Eagles fought back after halftime and managed to cut their deficit to just three points at 76-73, with 7:41 left in regulation. However, WCU stayed in front for the entire period as it shot 53.6 percent from the field to keep Niagara at bay.
The Catamounts used their uptempo style to their advantage as they outscored the Purple Eagles, 22-2, in fast break points.Game Notes
