Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Calvin Godfrey tallied 27 points and 10 rebounds, as the Southern University Jaguars defeated the Texas Southern Tigers, 79-71, in a Southwestern Athletic Conference clash at H&PE Arena.

For Texas Southern (5-9, 1-1), Aaric Murray posted 24 points on 8-of-12 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. Jose Rodriguez logged 13 points and eight rebounds, D'Aris Scarver netted 11 points off the bench and DeAngelo Scott scored 10.

Southern led for the entire first half, and while Texas Southern got within one in the final minute on a pair of Madarious Gibbs free throws, the Jaguars finished off the frame with four straight points to take a 44-39 lead into intermission.

The Jaguars appeared ready to cruise to victory up 58-47 with under 14 minutes to play, but the Tigers would not go away quietly, storming back to take a 68-66 lead with 5:20 left following a 2-of-2 trip to the line by Rodriguez. Southern put the game away down the stretch, however, finishing up on a 13-3 run.
