Recap: Youngstown St vs. Valparaiso

Youngstown, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - LaVonte Dority scored a game-high 27 points as the Valparaiso Crusaders slipped by the Penguins of Youngstown State, 74-71, in Horizon League action at the Beeghly Center.

Also scoring in double figures for Valpo (12-9, 4-2 HL) were Jubril Adekoya and Moussa Gueye with 13 and 11 points, respectively, as the squad posted a third straight win.

The Penguins (12-9, 3-3) were paced by Bobby Hain who tallied 16 points and cleared eight rebounds in 23 minutes of action. Kendrick Perry chipped in 15 points, Ryan Weber 14 and DJ Cole 12 points as the team had a three-game win streak come to an end.

Valpo had a rough time in the first half, shooting just 34.6 percent from the field and 1-of-4 behind the 3-point line, not to mention suffering 11 turnovers, en route to a 36-27 deficit at the break. In addition to converting 47.8 percent from the floor in the period, YSU also hit on 10-of-13 at the free-throw line.

In the second half the Penguins converted a total of just nine field goals, a mere 2-of-10 on the perimeter, while the visitors surged back with 57.7 percent action from the floor and 14-of-16 at the charity stripe. Two of those made free throws came from Keith Carter with just two seconds remaining in order to push the lead for Valparaiso to three points.

The Penguins had a chance to send the meeting to overtime, but Cole missed on a 3-point attempt in the final moments.

Youngstown State was beaten on the glass, 35-20, and cleared just four boards at the offensive end of the floor.
