UAB (4-1) vs. Temple (2-3) (ET)

GAME NOTES: The fifth-place game in the 2013 Charleston Classic pits the UAB Blazers against the Temple Owls.

Both teams are coming off victories in their respective bouts on Friday, with UAB taking down Nebraska (87-74), and Temple slipping by Georgia (83-81).

For UAB, it was redemption following the team's first loss of the season the day before, a 97-94 double-overtime affair against No. 19 New Mexico. The Blazers currently sit at 4-1 on the young season, and following this clash will return home for a pair, beginning with Wednesday's tilt versus Florida A&M. UAB opens Conference USA play at Middle Tennessee on Jan. 11, 2014.

Temple comes into this contest having recently snapped a three-game losing streak with Friday's win over the Bulldogs, the team laying claim to a 2-3 record in the early going. The Owls, who are playing as members of the brand new American Athletic Conference after years in the Atlantic 10, have some tough non-league bouts on the horizon, as they will take on local rival Saint Joseph's, as well as Texas before kicking off AAC play at Rutgers on New Year's Day.

Temple has won two of the previous three encounters between the two teams.

Chad Frazier went off for 32 points, to lead five players in double figures, and the UAB Blazers past the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Friday. Frazier, who has now gone over 30 points in each of the last two games, went 8-of-13 from the field, including four 3-pointers, and was 12-of-15 at the foul line for a UAB squad that struggled in the first half (.323 FG percentage) and actually trailed by three points at the break. The Blazers turned it around after intermission, and were scorching hot from the field (19-of-23) to finish the game with a 53.7 percent shooting effort. Big advantages in rebounding (41-28) and points from the charity stripe (24-12) also played a huge role in the favorable outcome. Rod Rucker logged another double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Blazers, who now average 83.4 ppg while allowing 74.4 ppg.

They grab a whopping 51.4 caroms per contest, compared to 35.6 for the opposition, and they're getting significant contributions from several players, not the least of which is Frazier with his 20.4 points and 5.8 assists per game. Rucker is averaging a double-double with 13.2 points and 11.0 rebounds per game.

Dalton Pepper scored a career-high 22 points and handed out five assists in helping push the Owls past Georgia on Friday. Pepper nailed five 3-pointers, the team going 11-of-20 from long range in the game, while shooting 48.2 percent from the floor overall. Will Cummings hit the game-winning trey and finished with 17 points, Quenton DeCosey tacked on 15, and Daniel Dingle chipped in with 12 for a Temple team that boasts four double-digit scorers on the season and is averaging 73.0 ppg.

Cummings heads the Owls' offensive effort with 18.4 points and 4.2 assists per game, while Anthony Lee is close to putting up a nightly double-double with 12.4 points and 9.2 caroms per contest. Pepper is shooting 40.7 percent from beyond the arc, netting 14.4 ppg as a result. With a record currently sitting a game below .500, it's no surprises to see the Owls in the red with regard to scoring (-3.4), rebounding (-0.8) and turnover (-1.4) margin.

This should be a highly-competitive game between two teams that would love to make a splash come conference time, but need to fine-tune things prior to then. Expect plenty of long-range launches from both, and for the Blazers to get a couple more to fall as they leave Charleston on a positive note.
