Recap: Rhode Island vs. McNeese State
Kingston, RI (SportsNetwork.com) - Xavier Munford scored a game-high 26 points, shooting 6-of-10 behind the 3-point line, as the Rhode Island Rams captured a 76-71 win over the McNeese State Cowboys as part of the NIT Season Tip-Off at the Ryan Center.
Gilvydas Biruta scored 17 points and pulled down eight rebounds for the Rams (6-2), followed by T.J. Buchanan and Jarelle Reischel with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
The Cowboys (2-5) were paced by Kevin Hardy with 24 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals. Craig mcFerrin and Adrian Fields both accounted for 12 points in the losing cause.
Munford tallied 13 points in the first half for URI, the team shooting 48.1 percent from the floor and 5-of-12 beyond the arc in the period, en route to a 37-26 advantage at the break.
McNeese State tried to battle back with an impressive 59.4 percent effort from the floor in the second half, but the squad knocked down just 1-of-7 on the perimeter, allowing the Rams to escape with the five-point decision.
Rhode Island was outscored in the paint, 46-24, but the host did generate a 22-6 scoring edge at the free-throw line.Game Notes
