Recap: Davidson vs. Western Carolina

Asheville, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Trey Sumler sank a pair of free-throws with three seconds to play in overtime and the Western Carolina Catamounts stunned the Davidson Wildcats 99-97 in the Southern Conference Tournament semifinals at U.S. Cellular Center.

Sumler tallied 25 points and seven assists for the fifth-seeded Catamounts (19-14), who advance to face Wofford in Monday's title game. James Sinclair netted a game-high 26 points and Brandon Boggs added 21 in the victory.

Chris Czerapowicz paced top-seed Davidson (20-12) with 22 points. He was one of six players to reach double figures for the Wildcats with De'Mon Brooks (17), Jake Belford (15), Tyler Kalinoski (14), Brian Sullivan (11) and Jack Gibbs (10) all getting in the mix.

It looked like Davidson was well on its way to advancing early on. The Wildcats shot 58.3 percent from the floor, including 5-of-11 from 3-point range, in the first half to take a 44-34 lead at intermission. Western Carolina missed all five of its shots from beyond the arc in frame, but did sink an even 50 percent overall.

After going down 15 early in the second half, the Catamounts went on a 28-12 run over a seven-minute span to pull ahead 66-65. The rest of the game was tightly contested, with neither team managing to lead by more than four points.

With 1:25 left to play, Mike Brown tipped in a missed layup from Tawaski King to put the Catamounts ahead 86-84, but Brooks answered with a layup on the other end to tie the game. Neither team scored in the final minute and the game went to overtime.

The Catamounts never trailed in the extra session, but it was tied 97-97 in the final seconds, when Sumler was fouled by Jack Gibbs. After Sumler hit the ensuing free-throws, Davidson did not have enough time to extend the game.
