Recap: Oregon vs. BYU

Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Oregon had a little less trouble handling BYU in the rematch between the teams.

Some extra depth certainly helped.

Elgin Cook had a career-high 23 points to go with eight rebounds off the bench as seventh-seeded Oregon knocked off 10th-seeded BYU, 87-68, in a second-round NCAA Tournament game from Milwaukee.

The Ducks edged BYU, 100-96, in overtime on Dec. 21 and outscored the Cougars' bench by a 49-10 margin in the sequel.

After Matt Carlino nailed a 3-pointer to bring BYU within 56-53 with 12:03 left, Oregon countered with an elongated 30-8 run to put the game out of reach.

Cook was 8-of-9 from the field for the Ducks (24-9), who will face second- seeded Wisconsin in third-round action in the West Region on Saturday. Joseph Young netted 19 points and Jason Calliste was 11-of-12 from the foul line and added 14 points off the pine in the triumph.

"Elgin Cook had a great game and really finished everything down low," Ducks head coach Dana Altman said.

Oregon shook off a midseason slump by winning eight in a row prior to its semifinal loss to UCLA in the Pac-12 Tournament. It began the year with 13 consecutive wins before dropping 8-of-10.

The Cougars (23-12) played their first game since losing sophomore guard and the team's second-leading scorer Kyle Collinsworth to a knee injury in the WCC Tournament final against Gonzaga.

They finished just 32.8 percent (20-of-61) from the field.

Tyler Haws scored 19 points, while Eric Mika and Carlino provided 15 points apiece for BYU.

"He's a guy that you can't replace, and he brings so much to our team but, you know, even with him out, I thought we had chances to win this game," Haws said of Collinsworth.

Carlino's triple capped a 14-5 BYU surge to turn a 51-39 gap into a three- point deficit, but Cook's three-point play and a Young jumper quickly extended the cushion back to 61-53.

Young had eight points during the lengthy swing and two Jalil Abdul-Bassit free throws upped the advantage to 86-61 with 4:14 to go.

Oregon cruised to the easy win from there.

Earlier, the Ducks raced out to a 15-7 start and headed into the locker room with a 39-31 advantage.

Game Notes
