Recap: Southern U vs. Prairie View

Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Tre Hagood poured in 16 points to go with eight rebounds as Prairie View shocked top-seeded Southern with a 64-46 result in the late SWAC quarterfinal.

Jules Montgomery added 12 points with five boards and three blocks for the eighth-seeded Panthers (10-22), who topped Mississippi Valley State to open the tourney and will play the winner of Thursday's Alabama A&M/Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the semifinals.

Malcolm Miller totaled 16 points for the Jaguars (19-13), while Calvin Godfrey had 12 with eight boards in defeat.

Southern doomed itself with a poor shooting performance in the first half, connecting on just 7-of-30 shots and trailing 25-16. Prairie View took advantage, scoring eight of the game's first 10 points, then fending off a brief Southern surge to take control by halftime.

The Jaguars never closed their deficit inside double digits for the entire second half. Montgomery sank two buckets, with Hagood, Montrael Scott and Demondre Chapman hitting one apiece to open up a 19-point edge almost 3 1/2 minutes in.

Chapman's dunk made it a 38-18 contest shortly thereafter. Southern made one last stab, closing to 52-42 with 2:09 to play on a Miller layup, but Montgomery scored the next eight points to wrap up the game in the underdog's favor.
