Recap: USC Upstate vs. Towson

Spartanburg, SC (SportsNetwork.com) - Four McGlynn buried a 3-pointer as time expired to break a 60-60 tie and give his Towson Tigers a 63-60 victory over the USC Upstate Spartans in the first round of the CollegeInsiders.com Tournament at the Hodge Center.

McGlynn scored nine points off the bench for Towson (23-10), hitting three 3- pointers including the game-winning shot. Jerrelle Benimon led Towson with 20 points and nine rebounds, also registering three steals. Mike Burwell and Marcus Damas each chipped in 11 points in the win. The Tigers will advance to the second round of the tournament and will face an opponent yet to be determined.

Jodd Maxey netted 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds to pace USC Upstate (19-14), while Torrey Craig tallied a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Ty Greene contributed 10 points off the bench in the loss.

USC Upstate shot 58.3 percent from the floor in the first half, and hit 8- of-10 from the free-throw line to help the team take a 39-26 advantage going into the intermission. Towson shot just 31.2 percent in the frame, and made just 3-of-13 from 3-point distance.

But the Tigers came roaring back in the second half, connecting on 48.3 percent of their field goal tries and forcing Upstate to commit eight second- half turnovers. The Spartans hit 37 percent of their shots in the period, and missed all six of their 3-point attempts. USC Upstate held a 58-55 lead with just over three minutes to play when Damas knotted the game with a 3-pointer. Towson then took the lead with seven seconds to play, and Greene tied it with a layup with two seconds remaining, setting up McGlynn's heroics.

Towson held a 24-8 edge in points off turnovers, and a 32-24 advantage in points in the paint. USC Upstate won the battle in bench scoring, 18-11.
