Oxford, OH (Sports Network) - Former Miami-Ohio men's basketball coach Charlie Coles died Friday. He was 71 years old.

The school announced the news Friday. A cause of death was not disclosed.

Coles played for Miami from 1963-65 and was the coach at his alma mater 16 seasons from 1996-2012. He guided the RedHawks to a record of 263-224 with NCAA Tournament appearances in 1997, 1999 and 2007. Miami also reached the NIT and CBI twice under Coles.

In addition to his tenure at Miami, Coles also spent six seasons as the head coach at fellow Mid-American Conference member Central Michigan from 1986-91. He led the Chippewas to a record of 92-84 and is the MAC's all-time leader in conference victories with 218.

Coles was the MAC's top coach twice -- first in 1987 with Central Michigan and again in 2005 with Miami.

He is survived by his wife, Delores, along with son Chris and daughter Mary, as well as four grandchildren.
