Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Washington Huskies have swiftly filled their head coaching vacancy.

The university named Boise State's Chris Petersen to the position on Friday, less than a week after Steve Sarkisian left the Huskies to take the head coaching job at USC.

Petersen built a highly successful program at Boise State. During his eight years at the helm, the Broncos won five conference titles, with the first four coming in the WAC before a move to the Mountain West resulted in a league crown last year. Petersen compiled a glittering 92-12 overall record and led Boise State to a pair of BCS bowl wins.

"On behalf of the University of Washington and the entire Husky Nation, I am proud to welcome Chris Petersen as our new head football coach," Washington athletic director Scott Woodward said in a statement. "Coach Petersen's success and record are extraordinary, but even more impressive is the man himself. His integrity, work ethic and character make him an outstanding fit and leader of our student-athletes at UW. We are thrilled and proud to call Coach Petersen a Husky."

The 49-year-old Petersen is the only two-time winner of the Paul "Bear" Bryant Award as the national coach of the year.

The Broncos posted an 8-4 mark this season, including a loss to Washington.

Boise State athletic director Mark Coyle has named Bob Gregory the interim head coach. Gregory is in his fifth season as an assistant on the Bronco staff and his second as an assistant head coach.

He has coached the linebackers since returning to Boise State prior to the 2010 season, and served as the defensive coordinator for the Broncos in 2001.
