Tulsa, OK (Sports Network) - Alex Singleton ran for 102 yards and three touchdowns, as the Tulsa Golden Hurricane opened their Conference USA schedule with a 45-10 rout over Tulane at Chapman Stadium.
Cody Green threw for 274 yards and two TDs to help the Golden Hurricane (1-1, 1-0 C-USA) rebound from last week's season-opening loss to Iowa State. All told, Tulsa racked up 31 first downs and 651 yards of total offense for the game.
Ryan Grant was one of the few bright spots for the Green Wave (0-2, 0-1), as he finished with five catches for 109 yards and a score. Tulane, which finished with a mere 177 total yards, has now lost 12 in a row dating back to last season.
There was a scary moment on the final play of the first half when Tulane safety Devon Walker suffered a broken neck and collapsed lung during a collision with a teammate. According to multiple reports, Walker stopped breathing and was revived by emergency medical workers who performed CPR and a tracheotomy. He is currently in the emergency and trauma center at nearby Saint Francis Hospital, and the team's Twitter page reported that Walker was in stable condition.
Tulane grabbed an early 3-0 lead on a 49-yard field goal by Cairo Santos midway through the first quarter, capping a 12-play, 58-yard drive that ate up six and a half minutes.
From there, it was all Tulsa. Singleton gave the Golden Hurricane a 7-3 lead on a two-yard run with just under three minutes to play in the opening frame. Singleton scored again on a one-yard plunge with 24 seconds to play in the first quarter.
Tulsa would tack on three more touchdowns in the second quarter to take a commanding 35-3 lead into the half. Green accounted for two of those TDs, tossing a 74-yard scoring strike to Thomas Roberson and a 16-yarder to Jordan James. Singleton notched his third rushing score of the day on a two-yard run with 4:48 to play until halftime.
Tulsa continued to pad its lead in the second half. After a scoreless third quarter, the Golden Hurricane made it a 42-3 game on Kalen Henderson's five- yard touchdown scamper midway through the final frame. Tulane followed up a 45-yard field goal from Tulsa's Daniel Schwarz with its only touchdown of the game, as Devin Powell connected with Grant for a 66-yard scoring strike late in regulation.
Tulane ran the ball 29 times and finished with only seven rushing yards. Meanwhile, Tulsa churned out 364 yards and four TDs on the ground.
