Recap: Kansas vs. Iowa State

Lawrence, KS (Sports Network) - Sam Richardson accounted for five total touchdowns, four of which came in the second quarter, as the Iowa State Cyclones downed the Kansas Jayhawks, 51-23, in Big 12 Conference action at Memorial Stadium.

Richardson replaced starter Steele Jantz in the first quarter and was nearly perfect on the day, completing 23-of-27 passes for 250 yards and four touchdowns while adding 43 rushing yards and another score on the ground for Iowa State (6-5, 3-5 Big 12). Jeff Woody rushed for 89 yards and a touchdown, while Josh Lenz (six receptions, 78 yards, TD) was the Cyclones' leading receiver.

For Kansas (1-10, 0-8), Dayne Crist threw for 156 yards and a touchdown, but he did so on just 9-of-20 passing while also throwing a pick. James Sims rushed the ball 20 times for 81 yards, and Tony Pierson tallied 110 total yards and two scores.

Iowa State opened up the scoring five minutes into the game with a 47-yard field goal from Edwin Arceo.

Kansas took a 7-3 lead later in the opening quarter when Taylor Cox rushed in a two-yard touchdown. The Cyclones responded at the tail end of the first quarter when Woody scored on an 11-yard rush.

The sea-saw continued early in the second quarter when Pierson ripped off a 55-yard touchdown for the Jayhawks, but that's when Richardson took over for Iowa State. He started by tossing a pair of touchdowns to Albert Gary (11 yards) and Aaron Horne (30 yards) within four minutes of each other to give the Cyclones a 24-14 lead. He then added a one-yard touchdown rush later in the quarter and followed that up with yet another scoring strike, this time to Ernst Brun, as Iowa State's lead ballooned to 38-14.

The Jayhawks stopped the bleeding to an extent with a Nick Prolago 21-yard field goal in the waning seconds of the half.

Arceo knocked through a 51-yard field goal for the Cyclones in what was a quiet third quarter.

Crist threw his touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter on a 37-yard strike to Pierson, but Richardson added one more touchdown pass, this time to Lenz for 14 yards, and Arceo added one more field goal (47 yards) for good measure.

Iowa State won the turnover battle, four to one. With the win, the Cyclones have become bowl eligible.
