Recap: Kansas vs. Oklahoma State

Lawrence, KA (Sports Network) - The Oklahoma State Cowboys survived a late Kansas rally and held on to defeat the Jayhawks in a Pac-12 matchup at Memorial Stadium, 20-14.

Freshman J.W. Walsh completed 18-of-29 passes for 255 yards, a touchdown and an interception for Oklahoma State (3-2, 1-1 Big 12). Joseph Randle added 80 yards on 29 carries, while Charlie Moore reeled in five catches for 97 yards and a score.

Kansas (1-5, 0-3) got another poor performance from quarterback Dayne Crist, who entered the game completing just 50 percent of his throws. Crist completed 10-of-22 for 136 yards before Charlie Weis removed him from the game in favor of Michael Cummings. Cummings was a little better, going 5-for-10 for 75 yards and a touchdown. James Sims was the most consistent offensive player for the Jayhawks, rushing for 138 yards and a touchdown on 27 tries.

Neither team looked sharp out of the gate as the first quarter ended without a score. After a lightning storm delayed play for more than an hour, Oklahoma State came out firing. A 31-yard completion to Victor Irokansi set up a four- yard rushing touchdown for Walsh, his second of the season.

Quinn Sharp added to the Cowboys lead, capping a 13-play drive with a 49-yard field goal. He then missed a 52-yard attempt as time ran out in the half, and Oklahoma State held a 10-0 halftime advantage.

The Cowboys increased their lead to 17-0 when Walsh hit Moore for a 72-yard touchdown, the longest reception of his career. Sharp hit another field goal, this time from 42 yards out, and with a 20-0 lead entering the fourth quarter, it appeared that the Cowboys had the game in hand.

But Cummings entered the game and injected some life into the Kansas offense. With 11:30 remaining in the game, he connected with Jimmay Mundine for a 22- yard touchdown. After a Cowboys three and out, it was Sims' turn to find the end zone. A 28-yard run set up his 30-yard score, the second Jayhawk touchdown of the quarter. With more than nine minutes left, Kansas was down by just six.

Oklahoma State punted it back to the Jayhawks with 6:55 on the clock, but Cummings' pass on fourth and five fell incomplete and they turned the ball over on downs after a four minute, 12-play drive. A roughing the kicker penalty on fourth and eight allowed the Cowboys to run out the clock and hang on for the victory.

Mike Gundy improves to 62-32 as head coach of the Cowboys, tying him with Pat Jones for the most wins in school history.
