Recap: TCU vs. Kansas State
Fort Worth, TX (Sports Network) - Collin Klein rushed for two touchdowns and a staunch Kansas State defense helped the No. 3 Wildcats take a 23-10 win over the TCU Horned Frogs.
Klein, who left in the second half of last week's game against Oklahoma State, went 12-for-21 with 145 yards and an interception and added 15 carries for 50 yards for the Wildcats (10-0, 7-0 Big 12), who thanks to Alabama's loss on Saturday are in position to be ranked No. 1 in the BCS standings.
"He played reasonably well," said Kansas State head coach Bill Snyder about Klein. "He made the plays he had to make in the ball game, but we were probably a little conservative for him. We could have given him more chances than what we did, but he played reasonably well. He managed the ball game as he always does. TCU is a very fine defensive team and, consequently, we weren't able to do some of the things we wanted to do."
Trevone Boykin was 17-for-30 with 164 yards, one touchdown and one interception while Brandon Carter caught the touchdown pass for the Horned Frogs (6-4, 3-4), who have dropped three of their last four games.
"We played a good football team, especially on defense," said TCU head coach Gary Patterson. "We needed to have more of a game plan at the end when we were making short passes trying to avoid the pass rush. We wanted to run the football and move the ball downfield. They were too good up front for our group, and we didn't handle them very well in passing situations."
Klein was picked off on Kansas State's first possession of the game, but nothing came of it and the team eventually got the ball back at its own 11.
On the first play, Klein found Chris Harper deep for a 62-yard play down to the TCU 27. Five plays later at the 7-yard line, Klein faked a pass and took a draw up the middle for a 7-0 lead with 8:14 to play in the first.
TCU again had to punt and Tramaine Thompson returned it 33 yards to the TCU 41. That led to a 41-yard field goal from Anthony Cantele for a 10-0 lead with 2:59 to play in the first.
Much of the second quarter saw little offense as TCU was continually stymied and Kansas State fared little better.
On yet another Kansas State punt, the team caught a break. Ryan Doerr's deep punt caused Deante' Gray to back track and he muffed the catch. Kansas State recovered at the TCU 5.
The team was unable to take full advantage, though, as the first two plays went for a total loss of six yards and the third down play fell three yards short of the end zone. Cantele's 20-yard field goal made it a 13-0 game.
The Wildcats were almost able to add more before the break as Ty Zimmerman picked off Boykin and returned it to the TCU 31. There was enough time for a field goal try, but Cantele missed the 48-yarder.
Kansas State all but put the game away with it's first possession of the third quarter. On the eighth play of the drive with the ball at the TCU 34, Klein kept it himself and ran down the left sideline into the end zone for a 20-0 lead with 8:21 to play.
TCU continued to struggle on its next touch and had to punt from its own 10- yard line. Perry shanked the kick and it only went eight yards, leading to a 27-yard field goal from Cantele for a 23-0 advantage.
A 13-play, 59-yard drive in the fourth saw TCU finally get on the board thanks to a 35-yard field goal from Jaden Oberkrom with 6:59 left, and Carter's 19- yard touchdown catch in the final minute capped the scoring.Game Notes
