Recap: San Jose St vs. BYU

San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - David Fales threw for 305 yards and three touchdowns to lead the San Jose State Spartans to a 20-14 triumph over the BYU Cougars in a non-conference matchup at Spartan Stadium.

Noel Grigsby caught eight balls for 132 yards and a pair of scores for San Jose State (9-2) which has won five straight.

Riley Nelson completed 28-of-51 pass attempts for 335 yards, a touchdown and an interception for BYU (6-5). Cody Hoffman brought in 13 of those passes for 155 yards. Jamaal Williams led the way on the ground with 62 yards and a touchdown.

Grigsby scored on a 51-yard touchdown pass from Fales early in the first quarter. However the extra point attempt was blocked putting the Spartans ahead 6-0.

Williams then scored on a 16-yard touchdown run to push BYU ahead 7-6.

The Spartans answered with an eight-yard touchdown pass from Fales to Chandler Jones.

Grigsby's second touchdown reception, an 18-yard pass from Fales, pushed the Spartans further ahead.

The Cougars would get a 20-yard touchdown pass from Nelson to David Foote with just voer two minutes left in the fourth quarter.

BYU then recovered a successful on-side kick attempt but on the seventh play of the ensuing drive Nelson fumbled the ball which was recovered by San Jose State. The Spartans were then able to run out the clock.

The Cougars lost despite owning a 422-364 advantage in total yards.
