Recap: Washington vs. San Diego St

Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Keith Price threw for 222 yards and a touchdown to lead the Washington Huskies as they picked up a 21-12 victory in their season opener over the San Diego State Aztecs at CenturyLink Field.

Bishop Sankey led the Huskies (1-0) on the ground with 66 yards and a touchdown while Austin Seferian-Jenkins led all receivers with 82 yards on nine catches. Kasen Williams contributed 75 yards and a touchdown on six catches for Washington, which is using CenturyLink Field while Husky Stadium undergoes renovations. Travis Feeney had a big time performance with five tackles, two tackles for loss, a sack, and a forced fumble.

In his debut with the program after transferring from Oregon State, Ryan Katz paced San Diego State (0-1) by completing 10-of-19 passes for 128 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Katz also rushed for 77 yards. Walter Kazee led the Aztecs' rushing attack with 86 yards on nine attempts. Nat Berhe tied for a team-high with eight tackles and recovered a fumble for SDSU.

The Huskies opened up scoring as Sankey capped off a seven-play drive with a two-yard touchdown run that gave the home team an early lead at the 9:23 mark of the opening period. Price threw his first touchdown pass of the season with 2:35 left in the first quarter as he connected with Williams for an eight-yard score. Travis Coons converted the extra point to make Washington's lead 14-0.

The Aztecs answered with a big play in the opening seconds of the second quarter as Katz connected with Tim Vizzi for a 47-yard touchdown pass. A failed two-point conversion by SDSU kept the Huskies' lead at 14-6. Neither team managed to score again before the end of the first half.

Washington's defense helped extend the lead as Will Shamburger returned a fumble 44 yards for a score to give it a 21-6 lead with just over ten minutes left in the third frame.

SDSU crept back early in the final frame as Adam Muema capped off an 11-play drive with a one-yard touchdown run. The Aztecs once again failed to convert a two-point conversion try which left them trailing on the scoreboard, 21-12.

The Aztecs stopped Washington on the ensuing possession, but their comeback fell short when a 10-play, 76-yard drive which took up nearly five minutes of the fourth quarter ended with a turnover on downs.

Washington narrowly outgained SDSU in total yards of offense, 328-327. The Huskies were successful on 9-of-15 third down conversions.
