Recap: Washington St vs. Washington

Pullman, WA (Sports Network) - Carl Winston rushed for three touchdowns as the Washington State Cougars upset the Washington Huskies, 31-28, to win the Apple Cup at Martin Stadium.

Winston carried the ball only 12 times for 27 yards, but managed to score all three touchdowns for WSU (3-9, 1-8 Pac-12), which picked up its first conference win of the season.

Jeff Tuel passed for 350 yards completing 33-53 attempts but threw no scores and two interceptions. Dominique Williams was his key target as Williams caught eight passes for 143 yards.

Keith Price completed 20-34 attempts for 194 yards, two touchdowns, and an costly interception while under center for the Huskies (7-5, 5-4), who had their four-game winning streak ended. Price hit Austin Seferian-Jenkins and Cody Bruns each for a touchdown while Kasen Williams led the team in receiving with 83 yards on eight receptions.

Bishop Sankey had an impressive day on the ground as he tallied 84 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries.

At the end of a near scoreless first quarter, Andrew Furney kicked in a 21- yard field goal to put the Cougars on the board first.

Early in the second quarter Price threw an 11-yard touchdown to Seferian- Jenkins to put the Huskies ahead. The Cougars responded with a 10- play, 81-yard drive that resulted in a one-yard touchdown run by Winston and put them back on top, 10-7.

The third quarter was dominated by the Huskies as they scored 21 unanswered points. Price completed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Bruns and Sankey scored on touchdown runs from two yards and one yard away to send the Huskies into the fourth frame with a 28-10 advantage on the scoreboard. Both Sankey touchdowns came on drives following Cougars' turnover that gave the Huskies starting position within the WSU red zone.

The fourth quarter saw the tides turn as WSU began to rally back. Winston found his way into the end zone two more times off 2-yard and 1-run runs. Tuel passed to Brett Bartolone for the two-point conversion after the 1-yard score and following a 45-yard field goal by Furney, the game was tied at 28-28 with 1:59 remaining in regulation.

The Huskies were able to drive 58 yards down the field to set up a Travis Coons 35-yard field goal attempt. However, the attempt was no good and the game progressed into overtime.

The Huskies started with the ball first in overtime, but on their first play of the session Price was intercepted by Kalafitoni Pole. WSU ended the thriller and its eight-game losing streak with a 27-yard Furney field goal.
