Recap: SMU vs. Memphis

Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Garrett Gilbert threw a touchdown pass and ran for two more scores as the SMU Mustangs beat the Memphis Tigers, 44-13, in Conference USA action at Ford Stadium.

Gilbert threw for 353 yards for SMU (4-4, 3-1 C-USA), which won its second straight conference game after losing at Tulane two weeks ago. Zach Line did the bulk of the work on the ground, rushing for 127 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries. Darius Johnson had nine receptions for a season-high 141 yards.

Memphis (1-7, 1-3) quarterback Jacob Karam had a forgettable afternoon, throwing for 85 yards and completing just 47 percent of his throws. It was the third time this season Karam threw for less than 100 yards. Brandon Hayes led the Tigers' rushing attack with 55 yards and a touchdown.

SMU produced two first quarter field goals from Chase Hover and a five-yard rushing touchdown from Line to take a 13-0 lead into the second frame.

Memphis got on the board early in the second stanza when Hayes scored on a 36-yard touchdown run, his only rush of more than five yards on the day. Hover and Tigers' long-range kicker Paul Henriques traded field goals, and SMU held a 16-10 advantage at the break.

Tyler Spurlock, another Tigers kicker, knocked down a 39-yard field goal for Memphis to cut the lead in half and put Memphis in position to pull off the upset. But Gilbert kept Memphis at bay by rushing two yards for a touchdown later in the period. His first rushing touchdown gave SMU a ten-point cushion as the game progressed into the final period.

The Mustangs scored the only 21 points of the fourth quarter to transform the once close contest into a rout. Gilbert scored on a ten-yard run, then later in the quarter connected with Der'rikk Thompson for a 37-yard scoring strike. Rishaad Wimbley capped the scoring with a four-yard touchdown run with just minutes remaining.

SMU out gained Memphis by 285 yards and held the Tigers to 3-of-14 on third down conversions.

Despite the loss, Memphis still leads the all-time series, 3-2.
