Recap: UAB vs. Memphis

Birmingham, AL (Sports Network) - Jacob Karam and Brandon Hayes produced three touchdowns each for the Tigers as Memphis took down the UAB Blazers, 46-9, in a Conference USA tilt at Legion Field.

Karam was nearly perfect from the pocket for Memphis (3-8, 3-4 C-USA), completing 14-of-16 attempts for 147 yards without an interception. In addition to his three rushing scores, Hayes gained a career-high 127 yards on 19 carries. Keiwone Malone made a huge impact and gave the Tigers great field position on multiple occasions by racking up 112 yards on five punt returns. He also helped the team as a wideout with 42 yards and a touchdown on two receptions. The win was the second consecutive for the team and the third of coach Justin Fuente's young career.

Freshman Austin Brown was consistently pressured by the Tigers' defense while under center UAB (3-8, 2-5) and was sacked a total of six times. Brown finished with 187 yards, one touchdown, and one interception on 23-of-41 passing. Darrin Reaves, who racked up 573 yards in his three prior outings, was held to just 38 yards on 14 carries.

The Tigers took control early on by jumping out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter. Hayes provided the first points of the contest by rushing seven yards into the end zone just over six minutes after the opening kickoff. Karam then created distance on the scoreboard by completing a 30-yard touchdown pass to Malone before finding Alan Cross on a 25-yard scoring throw.

Ty Long drilled a 48-yard field goal for UAB to stop the visitor's run and finally put some points on the scoreboard at the 11:51 mark of the second stanza. Memphis responded with a nine-play, 75-yard drive which Karam punctuated with a two-yard touchdown pass to Jesse Milleson.

The Tigers extended their advantage to 28-3 in the third period when Paulo Henriques drilled a career-long 51-yard field goal. They continued to pour it on as Hayes opened up the fourth quarter with touchdown runs of five and 46 yards.

The Blazers finally managed to find the end zone with six minutes remaining as Brown completed a four-yard pass to Kennar Backman for six points. However, it was clearly the Tigers' day as they blocked the extra point attempt and Charles Harris returned it all the way back for a defensive PAT. Harris's highlight special teams play finalized the score with Memphis on top by 35 points.

UAB made it past the markers on just four of its 16 third down plays. The Tigers were able to convert 6-of-11 third downs as they came out of their final road game as a member of the Conference USA with the decision.
