Recap: Houston vs. Tulane

Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Crawford Jones tossed two touchdowns and Ryan Jackson ran for two more as the Houston Cougars won their final game as a member of Conference USA over the Tulane Green Wave at Robertson Stadium, 40-17.

Jones overcame three interceptions and threw for 368 yards to lead the Cougars (5-7, 4-4 C-USA) to the victory. Jackson had 193 all-purpose yards along with the two scores, Ronnie Williams registered 10 catches for 73 yards and two touchdowns while Dewayne Peace had 101 yards receiving on seven catches. Matt Hogan was perfect on four field goal attempts for a Houston squad that is presumably headed to the Big East Conference.

Ryan Griffin threw for 346 yards and two touchdowns on 36-of-66 passing but also struggled with turnovers, tossing four interceptions for Tulane (2-10, 2-6), which finishes the season on a four-game losing streak. Ryan Grant caught a career-high 13 passes for 108 yards. The Green Wave rushed for just 43 yards as a team after taking into account the 27 yards lost by Griffin on three sacks.

The Cougars, who had lost three straight and four of their last five, came out firing against the Tulane defense. Jones and Williams hooked up for touchdowns of nine and 22 yards to take a 14-0 lead less than six minutes into the contest. The first touchdown was set up by a 53-yard Kenneth Farrow run on the first play from scrimmage.

Hogan added a 32-yard field goal late in the quarter for the Cougars, who led 17-0 at the end of the first period.

Tulane's first drive of the second quarter was much more impressive than a hapless first frame as the squad drove 80 yards in 11 plays and scored when Griffin found Xavier Rush for a 10-yard touchdown. Griffin completed passes to four different receivers on the drive.

Hogan kicked another field goal late in the half, this one from 25 yards out, and Houston led 20-7 at intermission.

Tulane cut into the deficit with a field goal early in the third quarter, a 32-yard effort by Cairo Santos, but Houston responded when Jackson broke off a 72-yard touchdown run less than a minute later.

The Green Wave's final touchdown of the season came late in the third when Wilson Van Hooser recovered his own fumble in the end zone to cut the Houston lead to 27-17.

Two more Hogan field goals (34 and 23 yards) and another Jackson touchdown run of nine yards capped the scoring in the fourth quarter for the hosts.

Houston, which entered the week ranked second in the conference with 469.5 ypg of total offense, finished with 591 yards in this meeting.
