Recap: Southern Miss vs. Texas-El Paso

Hattiesburg, MS (Sports Network) - Blaire Sullivan rushed for 98 yards and threw for 155 more as the Texas-El Paso Miners held on for a 34-33 win over the Southern Miss Golden Eagles in Conference USA action at M.M. Roberts Stadium.

For UTEP (4-8, 2-5) Sullivan completed 9-of-17 pass attempts while Nathan Jeffery had 76 yards and a pair of scores on the ground. Michael Edwards was the lead receiver with four receptions for 89 yards.

Arsenio Favor finished with 374 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 16-of-22 passing while adding a rushing score and 42 yards on the ground for USM (0-11, 0-7 C-USA). Quentin Pierce made the most of his two receptions with 125 yards and a touchdown. With the win the Golden Eagles, who won the conference last season have now lost 11 straight games, the longest active streak at the FBS level.

Southern Miss got on the board first with a 41-yard touchdown pass from Favor to Dominique Sullivan early in the first quarter.

A 29-yard field goal from Steven Valadez on the ensuing drive got UTEP its first points of the game.

The Golden Eagles answered with a 29-yard field goal from Corey Acosta.

Jeffery scored both of his touchdowns in the second quarter with a one-yard run followed by a three-yard effort. After the scores UTEP had taken a 17-10 lead.

Southern Miss tied it up with a one-yard rushing touchdown from Desmond Johnson.

The tie wouldn't last though as UTEP went into the break leading 20-17 after Valadez hit a 26-yard field goal just before the half.

A 36-yard field goal from Acosta pulled Southern Miss even once again.

Sullivan scored on a nine-yard rushing touchdown early in the fourth quarter to pull the Miners ahead 27-20.

Southern Miss would respond with an 81-yard touchdown pass from Favor to Pierce midway through the fourth quarter.

Autrey Golden then took the ensuing kickoff back 98 yards for a touchdown and UTEP was on top once again, 34-27.

Favor scored on a two-yard touchdown run on Southern Miss' next possession after which the Golden Eagles elected to go for two. Favor's pass on the conversion attempt fell incomplete and the Miners were able to run out the clock on its next possession.

Southern Miss lost despite out gaining UTEO by a 532-359 margin in total yards.
