Recap: Kansas vs. Rice

Lawrence, KS (Sports Network) - Chris Boswell connected on a 45-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Rice Owls to a 25-24 victory over the Kansas Jayhawks in a thriller at Memorial Stadium.

Taylor McHargue led Rice (1-1) by completing 23-of-35 attempts for 236 yards with one interception. Jordan Taylor had a career-high 101 receiving yards on nine catches while Sam McGuffie was held to only 29 total yards of offense. Charles Ross contributed 94 rushing yards on 14 carries. Boswell moved into second place all-time in school's record book for most career made field goals.

As for Kansas (1-1), Dayne Crist completed 16-of-28 passes for 144 yards and one touchdown. Crist also threw two interceptions. Tony Pierson had a career- high 120 yards on the ground on 19 carries.

Crist struggled from the start as his first pass of the game was intercepted by Rice's Bryce Callahan. On the ensuing possession, Boswell netted a kick from 47 yards out to give Rice a 3-0 lead to start

Kansas ran into more trouble as returner D.J. Beshears fumbled on the following kickoff, but the Jayhawks' defense forced McHargue into a red zone interception to avoid further damage.

Crist got into a great rhythm on the next drive before Kansas's 12-play, 79- yard drive ended with a made 29-yard field goal by Ron Doherty which tied up the score, 3-3.

The Jayhawks took advantage of a fumble by Rice's kick returner Donte Moore as Crist connected with Jimmay Mundine for a 23-yard touchdown that put the Kansas up 10-3.

Turner Peterson punched it in for a one yard touchdown to tie the game up at 10-10 after a 16-play, 94-yard drive that featured numerous defensive penalties by Kansas.

Kansas answered and used a strong rushing attack to march down the field before Schyler Miles punched it in from a yard to put his team up, 17-10.

The Jayhawks' defense recovered after allowing Rice deep into its territory by holding the Owls to a 29-yard field goal by Boswell which sent the game into halftime with Kansas leading, 17-10.

Taylor Cox finished off an impressive second half starting drive by Kansas with an eight-yard touchdown run that put it up, 24-13.

A 29-yard field goal by Boswell narrowed the deficit by three points just before the third quarter ended.

Rice began its fourth quarter rally with a six-play, 91-yard drive which featured a 29-yard completion from McHargue to Taylor. The Owls trailed by just two points, 24-22, after Ross finished off the drive with a two-yard run up the middle for a score. Rice's two point conversion failed, but Callahan gave the Owls a chance by recording his second interception of the contest with 3:47 left to play.

Boswell's game-winning field goal as time expired closed out Rice's 12-0 comeback victory.

Rice outgained Kansas, 403-339, in total yards of offense in the contest.
