Recap: Cincinnati vs. Virginia Tech

Landover, MD (Sports Network) - Munchie Legaux completed a 39-yard touchdown pass to Damon Julian in the closing moments to lift the Cincinnati Bearcats to a 27-24 victory over the Virginia Tech Hokies in a non-conference thriller at FedExField.

Legaux threw for 376 yards and three touchdowns on 19-of-42 passing for Cincinnati (3-0). George Winn led the rushing attack with 76 yards on 17 carries. Kenbrell Thompkins tallied 134 yards and a touchdown on seven receptions while Julian had 89 yards and the game-winning score on four catches.

Logan Thomas struggled under center for Virginia Tech (3-2), throwing for 242 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions on 17-of-30 passing. Michael Holmes gained 60 yards on 11 carries. Marcus Davis caught five passes for 101 yards and Corey Fuller made four receptions for 80 yards and a touchdown.

The only score of the opening period came courtesy of a 20-yard field goal by Tony Miliano, which gave Cincinnati a 3-0 lead.

Miliano added another three points, this time with a 43-yard field goal, with 8:26 remaining in the second quarter. The Hokies managed to take a 7-6 lead into halftime after Thomas rushed five yards for a score with 2:41 left before the intermission. Thomas's run was set up by an interception by Kris Harley, which gave Virginia Tech the ball at the Bearcats' 13-yard line to start the drive.

Cincinnati took a 13-7 lead in the third quarter as Legaux delivered a 29-yard touchdown pass to Thompkins for the team's first touchdown.

The Hokies came back in the final frame. Cody Journell made it a three-point game with a made 28-yard field goal which concluded a 62-yard drive. Later in the quarter, Virginia Tech drove 76 yards down the field before Michael Holmes punched it in from three yards out to give his squad a 17-13 advantage.

Less than a minute later, Legaux connected with Ralph David Abernathy IV for a huge, 76-yard touchdown pass. The huge pass play put Cincinnati up, 20-17 with 7:51 left to play.

Virginia Tech answered with a big play of its own. Thomas threw it to Fuller for a 56-yard touchdown pass which put the Hokies up, 24-20, with 1:49 remaining in the fourth quarter.

This set the stage for Cincinnati's nine-play, 85-yard game-winning drive.

The Bearcats held a 495-402 advantage in total offensive yards in the contest.
