Recap: Maryland vs. Georgia Tech

College Park, MD (Sports Network) - The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets scored five rushing touchdowns en route to a convincing ACC road victory over the depleted Maryland Terrapins at Byrd Stadium, 33-13.

The Yellow Jackets (4-5, 3-3 ACC) quarterback tandem of Tevin Washington and Vad Lee had just two completions on four pass attempts, but with 370 team rushing yards, it didn't matter much. Lee gained 60 yards on the ground while scoring twice, and Washington picked up 30 yards and a touchdown. Orwin Smith led the squad with 89 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. Jeremiah Attaochu wreaked havoc for the Maryland offense, finishing with three sacks and a forced fumble.

Shawn Petty, a freshman linebacker who hadn't been under center since high school, got the start at quarterback for the Terrapins (4-5, 2-3) after the first four quarterbacks on their depth chart were all lost for the season to injury. Petty struggled out of the gate but finished with two touchdown passes, an interception and 115 yards on 9-of-18 passing. Stefon Diggs was the recipient of both Petty touchdown passes for Maryland, which lost its third straight contest.

Georgia Tech opened the scoring midway through the first quarter after a series that consisted of just one pass play compared to 11 runs. Washington scored from one-yard out to complete the drive.

Petty was then sacked by Attaochu on his first career snap under center and failed to complete a pass in the first quarter. He also lost a fumble, which was picked up by Attaochu to give the Yellow Jackets' offense terrific field position. Smith scored five plays later and Georgia Tech was in control.

Lee added to the lead midway through the second quarter with a short touchdown run, and the Yellow Jackets led 20-0 at halftime. Maryland gained 46 yards of total offense in the half and only picked up four first downs. Petty completed just one pass for one yard in the half.

Robert Godhigh scored his second touchdown of the season with 3:26 remaining in the third quarter to put Georgia Tech ahead, 27-0.

Although the game was well in hand in the fourth quarter, Petty's late touchdown passes to Diggs provided Maryland with some hope heading into next week.

The Yellow Jackets improve to 15-6 all-time against the Terrapins.
