Recap: Wake Forest vs. Duke

Winston-Salem, NC (Sports Network) - Desmond Scott set career-highs with 11 catches and 134 receiving yards, as the Duke Blue Devils held off Wake Forest, 34-27 in Atlantic Coast Conference action from BB&T Field.

Sean Renfree completed 22-of-28 passes for 204 yards and Brandon Connette scored twice on the ground to help the Blue Devils (4-1, 1-0 ACC) snap a 12- game losing streak in the head-to-head series with Wake Forest, which dated back to 1999. At 4-1, Duke is off to its best start since 1994.

The Demon Deacons (3-2, 1-2) had not committed a turnover in either of their previous two games, but they turned the ball over four times in this contest. Terence Davis caught six passes for a career-high 100 yards in the loss, while two of Tommy Bohanon's three receptions went for touchdowns.

Ross Martin got Duke on the board first with a 35-yard field goal at the 10:28 mark of the first quarter.

Wake Forest responded with an 11-play, 75-yard drive, capped by Deandre Martin's four-yard touchdown run.

Duke answered right back with a long scoring drive of its own, which ended with Connette's two-yard touchdown run to give the Blue Devils a 10-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

After the teams traded field goals in the second quarter, Connette gave the Blue Devils a 20-10 lead on a four-yard touchdown run at the 9:12 mark of the third quarter.

Wake Forest closed out the third quarter with 10 straight points to tie the score at 20-20. Tanner Price found Bohanon for a 34-yard TD pass with 2:26 to play in the quarter, and Jimmy Newman added a 28-yard field goal just before the end of the frame.

Early in the fourth quarter, Price lost a fumble deep in Wake Forest territory, setting up an eventual four-yard touchdown run by Anthony Boone. The Blue Devils pushed their lead to 34-20 on Jela Duncan's 17-yard TD scamper with 2:50 to play.

Bohanon scored on a four-yard pass from Price to make it a 34-27 game with 42 seconds to play, but the Demon Deacons were unable to recover the on-side kick.

Blue Devils receiver Conner Vernon finished with five catches for 62 yards to tie the ACC record for career receptions at 232.
